Why choose English literature?

The study of English literature is the study of how we engage and think about our world. The study of literature is the study of culture, history, human relationships and the history of ideas. The OCR A Level in English Literature allows learners to undertake independent and sustained studies to deepen the appreciation and understanding of literature, including its changing traditions.

You must engage with ideas in the subject matter and explore how they are presented. Enthusiastic involvement in discussion is essential, as is the ability to retain individuality of ideas and recognising the role of literature in creating differing opinions and thoughts.

What will I learn about?

At AS level you will focus on the reading of poetry, prose and drama. You will study a Shakespeare drama, a modern drama, together with reading and analysing a selection of poetry.

At A2 level, you will continue with the study of the AS texts whilst exploring the genre of the Gothic. You also complete an independent study of three texts through exploring poetry, prose and drama.
